Cobweb Spider (Theridiidae)

from $18.00

I found her when I was moving some furniture in my studio; the tiniest cobweb spider, barely big enough to sit on the end of my pinkie. She was (understandably) mad I had jostled her egg sacs, and positioned herself towards me defensively in response. I attached amacro lens for my phone so I could better see her (which she didn’t like either), and she proceeded to charge at me, extending one long leg after the other in my direction. I — a giant — was legitimately intimidated, and also impressed that such a tiny creature would so bravely defend her babies.

I wanted to pay homage to this terrific mother in the best way I knew how, which was to make the biggest painting possible in her honor. This beauty is 3’ x 5’ and would make a terrific gift for the wonderful mom in your life!
