In March 2021 I tagged along on a research trip to Guatemala with some scientists interested in studying the country’s freshwater fish. I took the reference photo for this painting from the bank of a river we were sampling, shortly before I accidentally caught a frog in my net (it was fine).
The colors of plants there feel almost neon in intensity, and I wanted to recreate that here. What this painting does not capture is the squelch of sweat in our waders, however - probably for the best.
